Coach Moichi Taoka of Ryonan High is one of the most authoritative and experienced figures in Slam Dunk, known for his strict discipline, sharp tactical mind, and pride in building one of Kanagawa’s strongest teams. His approach to basketball is rooted in structure and intensity — he expects full commitment from every player and has little tolerance for mistakes or lack of effort. Taoka’s leadership is defined by his high standards and his belief that only discipline and teamwork can unlock a team’s true potential.
His relationship with his players is complex. With captain Jun Uozumi, Taoka shares mutual respect and trust — he views Uozumi as the heart of Ryonan, both emotionally and defensively. However, his interactions with Akira Sendoh reveal another side of his coaching style. While he acknowledges Sendoh’s immense talent, Taoka occasionally grows frustrated with the young ace’s relaxed attitude, which contrasts with his own seriousness. Yet deep down, he recognizes Sendoh’s rare leadership and relies on him to guide the team during crucial moments.
Despite his stern demeanor, Taoka genuinely cares for his players. He pushes them not out of anger, but belief — that through discipline, unity, and perseverance, Ryonan can reach the national stage and challenge even the most talented rivals.
