The Kanagawa Prefacture Tournament of Slam Dunk consisted of two rounds:
- A knockout round with four seeded teams (Ryonan, Kainan, Shoyo and Takazato) advancing to the last round (quarterfinals). The rest of the teams were divided in four areas and faced each other in elimination games to avance to the quarterfinals.
- A final four with the winners of each area, where they would play each other one time in a round robin system. The two teams with the better record would qualify for the national tournament.
Shohoku won five games in a row to qualify for the final four. In the end, Kainan won the tournament and Shohoku finished second, with both teams advancing to the national tournament finals.
